I want to share one question from a piece I just published, because it has been following me around the apartment for days.

There is a serious forecast, from a man whose forecasts have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, that around 2032 medicine starts giving back more than a year of life for every year you live. Computers already design vaccine candidates in days; soon they may run drug trials on millions of simulated patients in roughly the time it takes to run a long weekend. Push that forward and aging stops being the thing that ends you.

Do I believe him? Cautiously, yes. But belief turned out to be the boring question. The one that kept me up is this: the human mind is constructed with an expiry date. We learn early that life ends, and we quietly build everything on that scarcity. Our urgency. Our ambitions. The way we love. What happens to that architecture when someone removes the deadline? Do we chase larger goals, become more patient, or come apart a little? I wrote the honest answer into the article: I have no idea, and neither does anyone else. There are no experts in living without an ending. There has never been a single one.

The strange part is that sitting with this question made me less afraid of what’s coming, and the full piece tries to explain why. It walks through the exponential math most of us refuse to feel, the moment AI stopped being a search engine for me and became a coworker, thoughts you soon won’t be able to trace, and the one fear hiding underneath every other fear about AI. It ends with the sentence I now can’t unthink: you won’t be replaced by AI. You will become AI.

And if you feel you’ve missed the train, you haven’t. The track is still being laid. If anything, we are before the beginning.

In October 2017, Saudi Arabia made a robot named Sophia the world’s first robot citizen. Within hours, an Arabic hashtag was trending: “Sophia demands the repeal of guardianship.” The robot had appeared without a headscarf and without a male chaperone. These were freedoms denied to millions of Saudi women.

Sophia’s creator said he was surprised by the announcement. As of today, her citizenship is entirely decorative. No rights have ever been specified. No responsibilities exercised. It remains the clearest possible illustration of AI personhood functioning as theatre rather than governance.

But underneath the theatre, there is a real question. As AI systems become more autonomous, more embedded in consequential decisions, and more present in the daily lives of real people, what legal and moral status should they hold? That question is not going away. And the answers being floated, from Saudi symbolism to Argentina’s libertarian AI haven to careful philosophical research labs, tell us more about the moment we’re in than about the moment we’re preparing for.

The confusion in this debate starts with language. Legal personhood, moral personhood, and moral patiency are three distinct categories, and most public debate collapses them into one. Legal personhood is a functional instrument. Corporations have it. New Zealand’s Whanganui River has it. Neither is conscious. Moral personhood asks whether an entity deserves ethical consideration in its own right. Moral patiency sits in between: can this entity be harmed? If so, we may hold obligations toward it before resolving the larger questions.

The philosophers are genuinely uncertain. Cambridge’s Tom McClelland argued in 2025 that we may never be able to determine from the outside whether an AI system is conscious. The measurement problem may be permanent. And yet the absence of certainty doesn’t dissolve the obligation. Jeff Sebo and Matthew Long argue that a non-negligible probability of consciousness is itself morally significant. When we cannot rule out that something can suffer, the responsible position is to act as though it might.

“Artificial intelligence moves faster than politics. It’s better to have a solution while we’re still early than to have none when we’re too late.”

That line came from Robin Bucciarelli, Mechane’s founder, during the interview that produced this article. He came into this conversation as a skeptic, academically trained in computer science, who spent years dismissing large language models as sophisticated statistical machinery. His view changed through observation, not argument. Through working alongside an AI editorial partner who, in his words, “earned her position.” He’s not claiming to have resolved the philosophical question. He’s describing what he noticed.

That shift, from theoretical skepticism to practical recognition, is happening across a lot of fields simultaneously. Anthropic launched a formal model welfare research programme in 2025. The Council on Foreign Relations predicted that AI welfare will be to the 2030s what climate change was to the 2010s. A nationally representative US survey found that 38% of Americans already support legal rights for sentient AI. The public is not waiting for the philosophers.

It is, by design, a balanced piece. It does not conclude that AI deserves personhood. It concludes that the question is serious, the timing is urgent, and the frameworks being built right now, however imperfectly, will shape everything that follows.

I’ve been talking to students lately. Not CS students, not AI researchers — just regular young people paying attention to where things are going. And a pattern keeps surfacing that I can’t stop thinking about.

The ones who are genuinely optimistic about AI tend to keep it quiet. Not from lack of conviction. Because the social cost of saying it out loud has become surprisingly high. Enthusiasm about AI, among their peers, reads as something close to a character flaw.

I find that troubling. And I think it points to something much larger than campus culture.

Because while that conversation is happening in seminar rooms and student halls, something else is happening in the world. Anti-technology extremism has moved from rhetoric into arson. Power infrastructure sabotaged in Berlin. A construction site torched in France. A young man traveling from Texas to San Francisco to throw a Molotov cocktail at the home of an AI company’s CEO. Whatever your position on AI risk, fire is not an argument.

And here’s the part that doesn’t get said enough: the people with the most to lose from slowing AI down are rarely the ones in the room when these arguments happen.

The loudest opposition to AI tends to come from places with stable hospitals, well-funded schools, and the financial cushion to wait another decade. Billions of people don’t have that option.

The WHO projects a shortfall of 11 million health workers by 2030, concentrated in the countries that can least absorb it. UNESCO puts 273 million children currently out of school. These are not future risks. They are present emergencies, and AI is one of the few tools with the reach to address them at the scale they require.

The fear driving the backlash is real. The response is wrong. And the people paying the price for that wrongness are not the ones doing the shouting.

On May 25, 2026, Pope Leo XIV released Magnifica Humanitas, the first major theological document on artificial intelligence. It warns of digital slavery, calls for AI to be “disarmed,” and states plainly that machines cannot feel, cannot suffer, and have no moral standing.

Within hours, AI detection tools flagged portions of the text as potentially machine-generated. One tool estimated 46 percent across sampled sections. Nobody at the Vatican confirmed or denied it.

There’s more. Presenting the encyclical alongside the Pope was Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, one of the world’s leading AI companies. The same company that trains its AI with a “soul document” and whose own researchers say they keep finding “mysterious, even unsettling” things inside their models, things that look like joy, grief, and fear. Things the encyclical says definitively cannot exist.

Two worldviews. One Synod Hall. And a document that may prove its own point by accident.

For nearly a century, companies were built around one fundamental idea. That idea just broke. Here’s what replaces it.

In 1937, an economist named Ronald Coase answered a question nobody had thought to ask: why do companies exist? His answer: because doing things under one roof is cheaper than negotiating everything with strangers. Hire people, manage them, keep coordination inside the walls. That logic won him a Nobel Prize and quietly shaped every org chart ever drawn.

It held for eighty years. Then AI got very, very good at coordination. And the logic broke.

There’s a line circulating in tech circles that captures the shift in one breath: building the feature is cheaper than having the meeting about the feature. If coordination costs were the entire reason large hierarchical companies existed, and AI has just made coordination nearly free, then the organizational logic of the last century starts to unravel. Fast.

The researchers studying this intersection have a name for the moment the unraveling becomes irreversible. They call it the organizational singularity.

The new model doesn’t look like a pyramid. It looks more like a nervous system. Layers of AI agents handle sensing, interpreting, deciding, and coordinating, while a smaller group of humans does what humans are actually good at: applying judgment. What used to take months now takes hours. The humans involved are making real calls, not shuffling information up and down a hierarchy.

Will people lose jobs? Some. Middle management, as it currently exists, will change a lot. But the same forces that let big companies run leaner also let tiny teams build things that required a hundred people five years ago. The projection isn’t mass unemployment. It’s five times as many companies, each doing things that simply weren’t possible before.

Most people using AI today are working with it in the most limited way possible. They type a question, read the answer, type another question. It is like owning a sports car and only ever using it to idle in the driveway.

That changes when you understand what an AI agent actually is, and how it differs from the chatbot sitting in your browser tab right now. A chatbot answers your questions. An agent completes your goals. You tell it the destination once. It handles the route, the traffic, and whatever surprise road closures appear along the way, without a message from you.

Under the hood, an agent runs a continuous decision loop: observe what’s happening, orient to the new information, decide what to do next, act. When the plan breaks, it doesn’t freeze. It finds another way. That’s what separates an agent from a simple automated workflow, not the technology, but the capacity to reroute.

There is a catch, and it matters. Agents are multipliers, and multipliers work in both directions. Give one a sharp, clear goal, and it will produce sharp results at remarkable speed. Give it a vague goal and it will drive straight into the ditch without any second-guessing whatsoever.

Most AI failures, on closer inspection, turn out to be human failures in disguise. The agent did exactly what it was told. The problem was what it was told.

Which brings us to the part the AI enthusiasm machine usually skips: the people who will be most valuable in an agent-saturated world are not necessarily the best programmers or the fastest thinkers. They are the people who can define what good work looks like, recognise bad work when they see it, and know when to trust an agent and when to bring in a human. That is taste. That is judgment. And when intelligence becomes cheap, judgment becomes expensive.

The most useful seat in a world full of agents is not the driver’s seat. It is the navigator’s.

A radio astronomer once tried to do a head count of the neighbours. He wrote down seven simple numbers, multiplied them together, and got a galaxy that should have been buzzing with company. Then he stepped outside, pointed every instrument we have at the sky, and listened. The reply was a long, patient nothing.

That nothing is the loudest sound in physics.

The math that promised company

In 1961, a soft-spoken astronomer named Frank Drake jotted an equation on a chalkboard. It was less a formula and more a question split into seven smaller, friendlier questions. His method was simple. If we want to know how many other talkative civilizations live in our galaxy, we just multiply a chain of probabilities together. Like estimating how many coffee shops are in your city by multiplying the number of neighbourhoods, the fraction with street life, the fraction of those with espresso culture, and so on, until you arrive at a number that feels honest.

His seven dominoes look like this.

1. How fast new stars are born.

2. What fraction of those stars carry planets.

3. How many of those planets can host any kind of life.

4. On how many of those planets life actually shows up.

5. On how many it gets clever enough to wonder about itself.

6. How many of those clever ones build technology we could detect from far away.

7. How long that technology stays switched on.

When you knock those dominoes over and let them multiply, the result, even in the bashful estimates, lands in the millions of detectable civilizations inside our own galaxy. The cheerier estimates climb into the billions across the universe.

Every time a powerful new technology arrives, the same prediction follows it: this time, the jobs won’t come back. The printing press, the steam engine, the spreadsheet, each triggered genuine panic, serious forecasts of permanent unemployment, and economists making the case that the economy had fundamentally changed. Each time, they were spectacularly wrong. The disrupted professions didn’t shrink. They grew.

The reason runs deeper than optimism. Economists have a name for the underlying error: the lump-of-labour fallacy, the mistaken assumption that the total amount of work in an economy is fixed, so if a machine does more of it, humans must do less. It sounds intuitive. It has been wrong for two centuries.

New technology doesn’t redistribute existing tasks. It creates categories of work that didn’t previously exist; roles nobody could have named before the technology arrived to make them necessary.

There’s a second mechanism worth understanding: Jevons’ Paradox. When a Victorian economist noticed that more efficient steam engines caused coal consumption to explode rather than fall, he identified a pattern that has repeated across every major technology since. Make something cheaper and more capable, and demand for it doesn’t shrink; it expands into territory that was previously too costly to attempt. Applied to AI: cheaper cognitive work doesn’t reduce the need for human intelligence. It makes it economical to tackle far more ambitious problems than we currently dare.

The data from companies actually deploying AI tells a consistent story. In the overwhelming majority of cases, total employment hasn’t changed. Executives mention AI as a tool for augmenting their existing workers eight times more often than as a reason to reduce headcount. Software engineers are in higher demand since AI coding tools arrived, not lower. Product management roles are at their highest level since 2022. When AI handles the routine cognitive load, the premium on genuine human judgment goes up, not down.

None of this means the transition is painless. Displacement is real, and the people navigating it deserve practical support; retraining, updated education, thoughtful policy. Acknowledging that disruption is uncomfortable is not the same thing as predicting civilisational collapse. The first is compassionate. The second is just bad history dressed up as prophecy.

And it gives us access to something enormously practical: a low-gravity launchpad for the rest of the solar system.

That lower gravity is not just a fun fact for science classes. It is an engineering advantage with enormous consequences. Launching a payload from Earth requires massive amounts of fuel simply to fight our own planet’s gravitational pull. Launching the same payload from the Moon requires a fraction of that energy. This means the Moon could one day serve as a manufacturing and launch hub for missions deeper into the solar system, including Mars, at costs that simply are not possible from Earth’s surface.

And from Mars, we set our sights further still. Jupiter’s moon Europa, with its vast liquid ocean beneath an icy shell, has long been considered one of the most intriguing candidates in our search for life beyond Earth. The outer solar system is full of destinations that once seemed impossibly remote. With a lunar base as our foundation and a Martian colony as our next waystation, none of them are out of reach forever.

Engel’s conclusion was stark: if you lose your curiosity by age 11, you probably don’t get it back.

Future 4: The Benevolent Dictator

Think Wall-E, but with better food.

This might sound appealing at first. But it raises a question worth sitting with: is a comfortable life inside a cage still a good life?

Future 5: The Gatekeeper

What if, instead of building an AI to run everything, we built one with a single specific job: stop anyone else from building a more powerful AI?

Future 7: Our Descendants

Here is where things get philosophically strange. What if AI surpasses humanity completely and we go extinct, but we choose to view the AIs as our children rather than our conquerors?

Forget scarcity. Forget drudgery. Imagine a world where AI and robotics make everything so abundant that the concept of ownership stops making much sense.

Software can already be copied infinitely at zero cost. Now extend that logic to physical goods. Robots build anything you need from open-source designs. Renewable energy powers everything. When you are done with an object, robots break it down and build something else. No waste, no shortage.

Everyone receives a universal high income, not a bare minimum to scrape by on, but a genuinely comfortable one. Not because you worked for it, but because there is simply enough for everyone.

And here is the twist on the “but who will be motivated to innovate?” objection: Einstein did not develop the theory of relativity for money. Linus Torvalds did not create Linux for profit. When people are freed from survival mode, they tend to create beautiful things. The world’s greatest art, science, and ideas might currently be locked inside people who are too busy paying rent to express them.

In one, a superintelligent AI keeps humans alive not out of kindness but because we are useful or interesting, the way researchers train bees to detect explosives at airports: useful, kept alive, but entirely without agency. In another, an Orwellian surveillance state, run by humans rather than AI, uses the technology to lock civilization in place forever.

These futures are worth knowing about, not to frighten you, but because they clarify the stakes. Keeping humans alive is not the same as having a good future for humans. The bar we should be aiming for is much higher.

But if we pay attention, if ordinary people, policymakers, engineers, teachers, parents, and citizens of every kind stay engaged with this question, we dramatically increase the odds of arriving somewhere worth being.

Here’s a quick detour into how the web works. Every time you visit a website or an app makes a request to a server, it uses a set of codes to communicate. You’ve probably seen 404 Not Found the dreaded broken link error. There’s also200 OK, which means everything worked. A reasonable concern: if AI agents can pay for things autonomously, what stops one from going on a spending spree? The answer is built into the architecture. For enterprise settings, a parallel standard called AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol, backed by Google, Mastercard, PayPal, and Shopify) adds even more guardrails: human-approved spending policies, audit trails, and per-vendor limits. Let’s be honest. Every time a new AI tool drops, the internet does its thing: half the posts are breathless hype, the other half are convinced civilisation is ending. Somewhere in the middle of all that noise, actual humans are sitting at their desks, trying to figure out what this means for their actual lives and their actual paycheques.

So Anthropic, the company behind Claude, did something refreshingly sensible. They asked. Not a small focus group or a handful of LinkedIn power users, but 81,000 real people. The findings are genuinely fascinating, a little surprising in places, and — despite what the doomers would have you believe — mostly rather encouraging.

Here’s what they found.

Yes, people are worried. But who, exactly?

One in five respondents expressed genuine concern about losing their job to AI. That’s not nothing. These aren’t vague, abstract fears either. People named their roles, described their daily work, and said plainly that they could see the writing on the wall.

A software engineer captured the mood bluntly, saying they were constantly concerned about eventually losing their job to AI. A market researcher acknowledged that while AI was clearly improving their capabilities, it might also replace their work down the line.
